What does all this mean?

Your FIRE Number

Your FIRE number is the total amount of money you need invested to stop working. We work it out by taking your monthly expenses, multiplying by 12 to get a yearly figure, then multiplying that by 25. Once your portfolio reaches this number, your investments can cover your lifestyle without you needing a paycheck.

The 4% Rule

The 4% rule is a guideline from decades of market research. It says that if you withdraw 4% of your portfolio in your first year of retirement and adjust for inflation each year after, your money should last roughly 30+ years. That's where the "multiply by 25" comes from — 4% of 25× your annual expenses equals one year of spending.

Your Retirement Age

This is the age your portfolio is projected to hit your FIRE number, based on your current savings, what you add each month, and the return you expect. The earlier you start and the more you invest, the sooner this number arrives.

Total Invested vs. Investment Growth

"Total Invested" is the money you actually put in from your own pocket. "Investment Growth" is what the market added on top through compounding. The longer your time horizon, the bigger the growth portion tends to be — that's the magic of compounding.
